A little-known writer spends his day looking out the window and worries over his writing. One such day, a small octopus slips into the writer’s room through a crack in the window screen. The octopus offers to take the writer anywhere he wants, but the writer hesitates to take up the offer. The writer then puts the octopus on his shoulder, and sets out on a journey. Small Octopus is the story of a figure who feels out of place. Through this chance meeting with a small octopus, the figure finally comes face to face with himself, and poses questions to himself.
Doyeong Kim is a creator whose oeuvre often involves 20th-century Korean history, and who unearths and tells the histories of individuals not recorded in the greater currents of the period. Based on real events, his work explores the various forms of human nature that exist within such stories. Recently, he has devoted attention to stories closer to the self, pondering the ‘me’ who is living out the present moment.
