One of the major social issues of our time is that of suicide due to social isolation. In countries such as the UK or Japan, the government has already taken an active role in monitoring the loneliness of people. Top-Percentile Solitary is a work that heds light on the structural paradoxes of Korean society, centering on the loneliness and relationships of modern people. In the work, Korea deploys a ‘connection system for solitaries’ in order to put under control the deep-seated social disease that liness has become. Ajin has never thought of herself as a lonely person, but according to hertest results, she is a ‘top-percentile solitary.’ Following the system, she is assigned to stay with Yuna, who has scored in the bottom 10 percent, and her family, bout whom she comes to discover hidden secrets.
Ji-ah Yeon is a playwright interested in various contemporary social issues including climate change, gentrification, and hierarchical violence. She is the leader of the creative collective Hyeyum, and seeks to tell stories about life through theater, based on ‘thoughts’ deep and wide.
