No End, Only Silence
Playwright and director Sohee Youn explores the concept of time’s fluidity. Her plays, set in the near future, delve into stories where time’s passage varies among individuals and are inspired by her own experiences.
No End, Only Silence is a disaster narrative and a fable devoid of any lesson. With the world on the brink of destruction, two individuals in wheelchairs, Fil and Van, along with their dog, are unable to board an evacuating spaceship and are thus left behind. As they face an uncertain future, a parallel narrative unfolds aboard the spaceship. Onboard, a boy and a girl, who concealed their scars to gain entry, are unable to find seats. As they wait for the impending, yet unknown, end of the world, they talk about “the future that came first,” while those those who wander talk about “the repeating past.” Sohee Youn invites the audience to contemplate an unendurable future where time, unlike in capitalism, holds no value and beginnings and endings are uncertain.
