Ballet, originating in Europe, embodies the basic principles of dance that one must often learn as part of any dance education. Though the elegance of ballet and its extreme techniques tests the limits of the human body and continues to enamor us, can we attach the word “beauty” to the unquestioning admiration of Western culture, intense and systematic ballet training, and the stereotypical image of ballerinas?

Meta Ballet: Non-Copellia Manifesto concludes the ballet workshop, Ballet for All Bodies. Born from the simple question, “Can ballet be improvised?” the project aims to discover “a different kind of ballet” by approaching the dance not as a fantasy story, but as a tool for facing the reality of one’s body. The workshop performance attempts to create ballet that is more dynamic, rather than a simple viewing experience that neither requires nor inspires critical thinking.

Working as a creator, documentarist, and educator, ballet major Sangeun Yoon discovers fascinating points within and outside the realm of dance. Yoon is currently working on projects that explore ballet from different angles. Escaping the traditional image of ballet as the finest form of beauty, Yoon focuses on “ballet for all bodies” presented by diverse age groups and bodies.
