This is a new work by Youjin Seol, the recipient of the 12th DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Awards. Youjin Seol eliminates existing traits of the theater as much as possible before rearranging characters, sounds, light, and objects in her own way. In September (2019), just two white lines on the floor and a couple of chairs managed to convey the temporal rhythm and spatiality of a train station where many people arrive and depart. In To You (2019), Seol maximized the stage space by leaving it empty and using partial lighting to create a womblike space. In Lemon Soda Summer Clean-shot (2019), the entire theater was transformed into a basketball stadium. In The 4th Wall (2020) and Tale of Hong Pyung Gook (2021), she erased even traces that could hint at the play’s narrative, creating a strictly neutral, empty space. In a space that has been erased and rearranged, the actors’ movements and speech, light, and sound exert a unique presence. The actors’ speech and movements transcend the dialogue of the play and interact with the audience, presenting new forms of coexistence and solidarity for the world outside the theater.
